TMS for Migraines

Discuss your migraine history, current care, and whether an off-label Deep TMS approach is appropriate for you.

Understanding migraines

Migraine is a neurological condition that can involve intense headache, sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and sometimes visual disturbances or aura. Frequent episodes may interfere with work, school, and family life.

Start with your headache history

A primary care clinician or neurologist can evaluate your symptoms and discuss preventive and acute treatments. A symptom diary may help identify patterns involving sleep, stress, meals, hydration, and other triggers.

Dr. Drell reviews your migraine history, previous treatments, and any accompanying depression or anxiety before discussing whether TMS may be appropriate.

Different devices have different indications

Some TMS devices have migraine-specific FDA clearance. That does not automatically apply to BrainsWay Deep TMS. The migraine treatment discussed at this practice is an off-label use of our Deep TMS approach.

Research findings depend on the device, stimulation protocol, and type of migraine. We discuss the potential benefits and uncertainties without promising a particular reduction in headache days.

Treatment planning and costs

The treatment schedule is individualized. Continue your migraine care and medications under your existing clinician’s guidance. Off-label Deep TMS for migraine may not be covered by your plan, so clarify costs before beginning treatment.

Safety and expectations

TMS has risks, including scalp discomfort, headache, and a rare risk of seizure. Your team reviews medical conditions, medications, implants, and other precautions before treatment. Results vary, and TMS is not a replacement for ongoing medical or psychiatric care.
